Inauspicious happenstance- you know, a pandemic — bonds the platinum hit’s title to the entire 2020 mood. Maybe that’s what struck a nerve with all of us; Or maybe Stella Bennett was simply a star waiting to go supernova. Early jams from the “FIRE ON MARZZ” EP, like “Soaked” and “Glitter,” were just that: straight up jams. From a songwriting standpoint, funky basslines and buoyant weirdness are the kiwi’s bread ‘n’ vegemite. She’s branched out this year too — look to the Kenny Beats spooky-hop collab “Night Garden.” All that to say: this DSCVR at Home performance of new single “Snail” is sumpin special. With her bandmate Tia handling the syncopated synths and wacky samples, BENEE dances around a treehouse overlooking her scenic hometown. Many months removed from touring, their happy chemistry remains infectious — you’ll be singing along in no time.
